How To Create An 'Introvert Zen Zone' In 6 Steps

If you are an introvert, you know the importance of peace and quiet

Introverted people experience burnout a lot quicker than others. For this reason, they need to have a zen place where they can go to relax and recharge their batteries. Unfortunately, no matter how cozy and comfortable your home might be, it also has stressors. For instance, introverted parents cannot find a safe space where they can recharge if their house is always noisy and messy. So, what should you do if your home does not provide the peace and quiet you need? Designate and create a small introvert zen zone; in other words, a place where you can feel calm and detached from the world.

There are 6 things you need to do to create your zen zone.

1. Find an area of seclusion.

Your zen zone does not have to be large. It can be an entire room such as your bedroom or office but it can also be a small corner if your home has limited space. If your area is small, you can get creative and use curtains or a movable room divider to make the zone secluded. The most important thing when choosing your area is to ensure that it can provide you with privacy.

2. Ask yourself how you want it to feel

Before you begin designing your introvert zen zone, you need to be sure of what you want. After you have found your area, decide how you want it to feel. The best way to do this is to write down a list of adjectives. For example, you may want it to be airy, warm, bright, and soft. Alternatively, you might feel more relaxed if it was darker or colder. In any case, write down your own unique list. Then, begin designing your zen zone accordingly.

3. Embrace minimalism.

Do not fill your zen zone with random objects as you risk making it feel unkempt and messy. Instead, pick only a few items and make sure that each one serves a purpose. A tidier space will clear your mind and allow you to recharge.

4. Include a natural element.

If being in nature makes you feel good, consider including a natural element. This can be something as simple as sunlight, a plant, images of nature, etc. Such elements have the power to relieve stress and make you feel calm.

5. Focus on the senses.

Think of what makes you feel calm and relaxed. Is there a certain sound or smell that makes you feel at peace? If so, incorporate it. You can do this by lighting scented candles or playing sounds that remind you of nature (flowing rivers, birds singing, ocean waves, distant thunderstorms, etc.)

6. Make sure it is well kept.

Inform everyone you live with that this is your zen space. Keep it tidy and ask your roommates or family members not to make a mess (if they are allowed to use it). Leaving your zen zone dirty and messy defeats the entire purpose of having such a space.

Now that you know everything you need, go on and get started!

Halloween fever! This mom has gone viral with her quick & easy pumpkin carving hack.

If you also got that pumpkin craze, you are absolutely going to appreciate this lady’s awesome pumpkin hack. Preparing the squash for carving may not be your favorite part of the holiday, but this one is worth the attention.

Nina Rutherford, from Falkirk, shared her game-changing Halloween hack with her Facebook friends, but it quickly went viral all over the internet.

In only 5 minutes, you can have your pumpkin perfectly cleaned of all of its fillings. Here is how!

You will only need a pumpkin(obviously) and an electric whisk.

Nina Rutherford / Facebook

First, the 34-year-old mom starts by cutting off the top of the pumpkin. She then turns the whisk on and uses it all the way around the inside of the squash. Once the process is finished, Nina simply scoops everything out with a large spoon.

The result is a perfectly cleaned pumpkin ready to be carved and lit up on Halloween.

Nina Rutherford / Facebook

In her helpful Facebook post, which has been shared over 127,000 times, the crafty mom writes:

“I feel I need to pass on this Halloween pumpkin hack: once you have cut the top off get a hand mixer (with one or 2 whisks on it as both work) and use this to detach all the insides of the pumpkin…take the whisks right to the edge of the pumpkin so it scrapes the bits off then just scoop out the insides that are now all mush (it has just taken me 5 minutes to do the inside of a pumpkin 🎃

Nina Rutherford / Facebook

As per Mirror, Nina added:

“Each year I would say to friends and family ‘Oh you should try this hack’. Yet no one else had ever heard of it, so this year I thought I would take pictures and share them on Facebook. I didn’t think it would be this popular and honestly thought more people would have known about it already. Anything to make the pumpkin carving easier is always a win in my books.”

Do you find Nina’s hack useful? Are there any other Halloween tips and tricks you would like to share? Let us know in the comment section!

Couple transforms 1960s house into luxurious, award-winning home worth £750,000

A couple transformed a 1960s home that they bought for £525,000 into a luxurious house worth £750,000.

  • Becky and Adam spent five years transforming the rundown house into a luxurious, beautiful home.
  • The property is located in South East London and has four bedrooms.
  • The couple shared tips for DIY projects, budgeting, and renovations.

Despite having little DIY experience, Becky and Adam successfully renovated a rundown 60s house.

The couple bought the four-bedroom home in 2015 for £525,000 and although they did not have much DIY experience, they decided to renovate it. After five long and difficult years during which both Becky and Adam juggled full-time jobs, taking care of their children, and running an event company, they were finally finished with their project. The rundown 1960s house was transformed into a beautiful, luxurious home which is now worth £750,000! What is more, not only did the couple manage to increase the value of the home by £225,000, they also won the Ronseal Lockdown Garden award.

The couple did most of the work on their own and taught themselves using Youtube and interior design TV shows.

According to the Mirror, Becky and Adam renovated the home on their own, teaching themselves through Youtube tutorials and interior design programmes. Becky explained that while Pinterest and Instagram helped inspire the style of their home, it was the amount of money she knew they could save that motivated her most. Commenting on this, Becky said, “What you save in money though you have to make up with effort, it’s not easy but it is well worth it when you see the end product.”

Becky and Adam’s garden won the Ronseal Lockdown Garden award.

The couple gave tips on DIY and home renovation.

The entire project took five years and cost £50,000. Becky noted that it is important to buy things that are relatively cheap but still look luxurious. Commenting on this, she said, “Ikea is our favourite. The Range, Dunelm and B&M. Even recently Poundland trinkets and home decor has become very good.” Moreover, she explained that when purchasing a property to renovate, you should try to “buy the worst on the nicest street”. For those interested in taking on a similar project, Becky suggests:

Research furniture hacks for getting your own bespoke items. Give up your social life and weekends temporarily as you need time and cash while you’re renovating. Budget everything and stick to it and don’t underestimate the costs of jobs always allow for worst case scenario.

More of Becky and Adam’s work can be seen on Becky’s Instagram @21oakham.

When Mike Conner came across an abandoned fort on Thorne Island in Pembrokeshire, Wales, he decided to buy and renovate it.

As one can certainly imagine, renovating something this big and old comes at an expensive price. Conner himself notes that, ‘the cost is just off the scale’. Moreover, the location of the vast property makes everything even more difficult: “It’s just relentless here, a constant battle against Mother Nature.”  Subsequently, because of the wet and windy weather, Conner has ensured that everything inside the home is of the best quality and of the highest standard so it does not rust or wear away.

Dad builds his own backyard coffee shop from the ground up

Daughter documented the 3 month process of her dad’s incredible DIY coffee shop.

With a current global pandemic making it difficult to enjoy a cup of coffee outdoors, this dad has taken matters into his own hands and created a little piece of heaven.

Ed’s love for coffee drove him to build his very own coffee shop in his backyard. His daughter @Juliannastrid documented the entire process, posting images and updates on her Twitter. She explained that her father was a contractor and that this was his side project:

“My dad works FULL TIME as a contractor & THIS was his SIDE PROJECT. He worked on it ONLY after work & on the weekends. He took pieces that were “trash” from old jobs (the doors, materials to build the structure, the front window etc) & repurposed them to create his coffee shop”

Both the coffee shop’s interior and exterior look modern, elegant and sophisticated. By adding a small coffee table, two chairs and string lights outside, Ed has also made the small coffee house look even cozier.

The end result can be seen in the following photos:

Shortly after Julianna uploaded images of her father’s project on Twitter, they went viral.

Ed’s work was then featured on the news, shocking and surprising him as he had had no idea that his daughter had shared his project online. Since then, Ed and Julianna have uploaded a Youtube video where you can see his reaction to the news reporting a story about his project. In addition, the wholesome video also gives a full tour of the backyard paradise which Ed has built.

We are beyond excited to see what his next project will be; if you are too, you can stay up to date with his work on his Instagram @elsbuilds.

This couple turned an old school bus into a lovely house on wheels

People always say, “Home is where the heart is”. And it’s absolutely true! There’s nothing more comforting in this life than having a place to call your home. But what happens if you also dream about traveling the world with the love of your life? What if you wish to dive into the endless possibilities out there?

A couple found the perfect way to combine their mutual thirst for adventures and their craving for building a loving home.

They converted an old school bus into the mobile home of their dreams.

Their adventurous journey started in Florida, where the couple bought an old school bus. After lots of hard work, reinvention, remodeling, and of course, love, they turned the old vehicle into a beautiful house on wheels.

The couple admits the most difficult part was gutting the floor and getting rid of the chair rails.

Metal removal from the walls also wasn’t a piece of cake for the couple. They even needed to take a break from it and finished it when the walls were out.

But no matter how difficult it was at times, they didn’t give up because they were determined to create the home of their dreams.

Later on, new flooring had to be installed. “Shopping for floors is always fun,” they share in their Instagram account, where they posted their whole building expedition. It did take them a while to settle on the floors, but the result was totally worth it!

The whole recreation took the couple one and a half years. But every single day counted. They even considered making efficient mobile home energy by installing solar panels, which would save both energy and money. These two had everything figured out!

Furthermore, they started working on installing electricity. They share it was perhaps “the most challenging part of the build.” So, they had a friend over to help them with this difficult task.

When the old bus was slowly starting to look like a real house, the couple was happier than ever.

They didn’t care if it was midnight or dawn. Every minute they could spend on building their home, they would do so.

This is how working in progress looks like.

Next, they started building their dream little kitchen. Although it took a lot of time and the man wasn’t quite pleased while working on it, the finished product came out amazing!

After this, in front of the brick wall they put together piece by piece, they placed a little cozy-looking fireplace. Then, they build the sweetest tiny bathroom ever!

Finished bathroom 🙂

A post shared by Going Boundless (@going_boundless) on

And while we’re on the subject of smart tiny house decisions, take a look at how the couple maximized their small space by incorporating the bedroom together with the laundry room.

In just a year and a half, this adventurous couple managed to build the home of their dreams out of an old school bus.

They now have everything someone could need in their house. They have a gorgeous kitchenette with a slide-out pantry, a tiny bathroom with a skoolie shower, a multifunctional bedroom, and even a cozy reading spot.

What’s more, they have the sweetest ginger cat to keep them company on their journey. Meet Mr. Beebles!

They were finally ready to take on and explore the world. The whole rebuilding and remodeling was an adventure of its own. And every struggle on the way, and every scar from all the hard work finally paid off. Now, the amazing views they see from their lovely little windows are more than priceless.

Have you ever dreamed of having a cozy tiny house on wheels and traveling the world? Share with us in the comment section!

40 Ways to Chill Out in Five Minutes or Less

We know: you’re busy. Your inbox is into quintuple digits, you do the carpool scramble from school to karate or piano or soccer or champion Lego building, you cook and clean and just simply never seem to have enough time to catch up.

How can you possibly even think about relaxing when you barely have room in your head -or your schedule- to think anymore at all?

Take a deep breath, friends (we’ll talk more about that in a moment here).

We’ve gathered the 40 best ways to relax in five minutes or fewer. This way, you can build relaxation into your day every day…no matter how busy you are.

1. Plan a vacation.

You don’t have to have any dates fixed for it yet, but plan it as though you do. You may not be able to relax on the beach today, but preparing to do so calms your mind and lifts your spirits.

2. Chat with a friend.

Mounting evidence shows that people who are more talkative are happier than those who are not. Enlist a friend to give you five minutes of ranting time…and be sure to repay the favor another time.

3. Laugh.

Laughter is often called the best medicine and in the case of helping you relax or reduce stress it’s actually entirely true. Check out a funny YouTube video, tell a terrible joke to a friend -whatever gets you going! You’ll be more relaxed in mere moments.

4. Cuddle up with your pet.

Your SO is a good second, but when it comes to cuddling to relax and reduce tension, animals take the cake.

5. Inhale the scent of coffee.

As a great balancing sensation and subtle pick-me-up, the aroma of a cuppa will calm your frazzled nerves. No sipping required.

6. Get a whiff of citrus.

Just smelling orange, lemon or grapefruit aromas can calm your frazzled brain.

7. Have you tried aromatherapy?

This practice of relieving stress by inhaling the scents of different essential oils is highly touted by its practitioners, as different scents affect different emotional triggers in the brain.

8. Stop and smell the flowers.

Really, it’s hard to hang onto tension and stress when you’ve got a nose full of sweet floral scents. Keeping a jar or vase of your favorite flowers near your workspace can enliven your days and help bust stress!

9. Complete a crossword puzzle.

Brain games distract us from what we’re ruminating over or stressing out about by taking our minds away from these thoughts.

10. Get up and dance!

Moving your body + listening to music you love = an endorphin boost to de-stress and a mental break from rumination.

11. Listen to your favorite song.

This gets the feel-good hormones pumping and de-stresses in just a few minutes.

12. Write it out.

Simply putting our thoughts down on paper is often enough to ease the anxiety and stress they are causing.

13. Take a quick walk.

It doesn’t have to be a long one, just enough to get you away from the place where all of your stress is contained.

14. Run in place or, do any medium- to high-intensity cardio for a few minutes.

It’ll get your blood pumping and your heart rate up, as well as boosting those stress-busting endorphin levels.

15. Take a few minutes to stretch.

Even while you’re sitting at your desk, you can still do some chest-opening and other helpful stretches to help ease stress as well as relax your body.

16. Get into an asana or two.

A regular yoga practice works wonders for relieving stress and everyday anxiety, but if you don’t have time, moving gently into an asana or two that you enjoy can help keep you mindfully tuned to your body and its needs.

17. Organize yourself.

Stacks of papers and mail, office supplies everywhere, overflowing inbox…all of these contribute to your stress at work. Take a few minutes to organize your workspace to make it more conducive to productivity. As for your inbox: check out one of these apps.

18. Head for the window.

When you need a few minutes away, don’t start playing with your smartphone. Head for a window and look outside. Observe the world quietly, and curiously. What would the air outside feel like on your skin just now? Is it hot or cold, dry or humid, just kind of middling? You’ll be amazed at how much more efficiently nature de-stresses you than anything with a screen.

19. Light therapy has been used for treatment of depression for decades.

Use this to help with your day-to-day stress by relaxing in the sun’s rays for a few minutes every day. Can’t find the sun? Use a high-intensity lamp that aids in the production of vitamin D.

20. Make an area you can go to for a few minutes as needed to get away from it all.

It can be anywhere, even a bathroom stall, if you can relax there for a few minutes to take your mind off of your stressors.

21. Enjoy alone time.

Learning to be by yourself and enjoy that time, even if it’s only for a few minutes at a time, will reduce your anxiety and stress levels.

22. Brush your hair.

Really. Or knit, or fold laundry, or wash dishes. Activities that involve repetitive motion calm and soothe a stressed-out brain.

23. Place your wrists under cold running water.

The cool water will target the major arteries just below the skin and make you feel cooler, calmer, and less stressed. It’s a literal way to chill out.

24. Give the old stress ball a squeeze.

Sounds pretty low-tech, and for good reason: stress balls were CREATED to give us an outlet instead of taking a swing at our colleagues, BFF, SO, or whoever is causing your stress at the moment.

25. Give yourself a foot massage.

Keep it cheap and simple with a golf ball: you can even do it under your desk while working and nobody will be the wiser.

26. Try a little acupressure.

Acupressure might sound like it’s going to contribute to your stress rather than relieve it, but it’s really a system of light touches that encourages better communication between the fluids and energies in your body. You can give yourself a little acupressure by rubbing the soft, fleshy pad between the bases of your thumb and forefingers. Add a little essential oil for extra relief -try lavender, neroli or lemongrass.

27. Give yourself a hand massage.

One of the nicest things about a hand massage is you can actually give them to yourself without compromising the part getting the massage. Bonus: hand massages are especially nice if you type a lot for work.

28. Lower your eyelids.

No, seriously, there’s no faster, simpler way to remove yourself from reality than by simply closing your eyes for a few moments. Give yourself a few breaths to reset and then rejoin the world.

29. Get creative!

Visualization-wise, that is. This is otherwise known as daydreaming: take a few minutes to visualize something that makes you intensely happy, be it fantasy or reality.

30. Count to ten.

Counting slowly upward to ten and then back down to one is an extremely calming exercise. Maybe that’s the reason there’s a YouTube video dedicated to helping with this technique.

31. Give progressive relaxation a try.

Progressive relaxation teaches you to fully tense and then fully relax your muscles to help calm yourself (and help you sleep better, too!)

32. Remember that breathing thing?

It’s helpful. Taking slow, deep breaths can calm a racing mind and a racing heart. Pranayama breathing is super helpful, too.

33. Turn your pillow into a stress-sucking sponge.

Well, visually, anyway. Just the act of laying your head on a pillow can be calming, so rest your head on one and imagine it is sucking up all of your stress.

34. Try meditating.

All you need to meditate is yourself: you don’t need fancy retreats or anything like that. Meditation is just focusing on your breath. When your mind wanders, bring it back to breath. Practicing meditation daily is a known cure for stress and anxiety, and you can do it for five minutes or five days or more, whatever you’d like.

35. Eat a crunchy snack.

Sometimes the sensation of our teeth going through something really crunchy can help. That crunch can come from a candy bar or from a celery stick, so pick your stress-buster and get crunching!

36. Chew on some gum.

Chewing on fruity or minty gum has been shown to relieve stress and improve anxiety.

37. Eat a mango.

Take a five minute break to peel, slice and devour a mango. Tropical deliciousness aside, mangos contain a compound called linalool which is a known cortisol reducer.

38. Eat some honey.

Aside from its widely known properties as a skin beautifier and potent antibiotic, honey also contains compounds which help reduce inflammation in the brain.

39. Eat some chocolate.

The Surprising Power of Word Choice in Couples Dealing with Chronic Illness

Chronic illness is one of the most daunting obstacles a married couple can face.

Even strong connections can be shaken by a scary diagnosis. In resisting their newfound instability, partners often turn to self-help programs, support groups, and individual or couples counseling. Any tool – no matter how large or small it may seem – is not to be ignored in the face of this kind of crisis.

New research suggests a surprising strategy to use in addition to these – grammar and word choice.

When we speak with a beloved partner, we often become less guarded, and therefore more revealing of our true selves. A University of California – Riverside study found that analyzing our language during these moments can provide insight as to the well-being of the relationship on a deeper level. The study examined couples who were coping with breast cancer – a common and terrifying diagnosis. They found significance not only in what each partner said to the other, but in how they chose to say it.

Each couple in the study submitted to monitored conversations that were not about medical issues. Through their non-cancer-oriented talk, the researchers were able to gain insight into the relationship dynamics that were at play. Researchers analyzed their word choice, including emotional words, caring words, angry words, sadness words, anxiety words, and even simple pronouns.

Unsurprisingly, positive words – such as care and love – were associated with positive marital quality, while negative ones – such as stress and resent – were associated with negative marital quality. However, this study determined that the impact of our words can actually be significant at a much less obvious level.

According to this research, our pronoun choice can hold a surprising amount of power.  The couples whose relationships remained strong throughout this ordeal tended to use pronouns in similar ways. In these relationships, the patient often chose to use second person pronouns such as “you” and “your”, while their spouse gravitated toward first person pronouns such as “I”, “me”, and “my”.

This may seem counterintuitive. After all, shouldn’t the patient be the focus of the relationship? Don’t they need the most support, attention, and care? According to lead researcher Megan Robbins, this kind of thinking is exactly what leads to the imbalance that destabilizes many marriages.

“Spouses’ use of first-person singular pronouns, and patients’ use of second-person pronouns, was positively related to better marital quality for both partners as the focus wasn’t always on the patient. So, it reflects balance and interdependency between partners,” she explained. “Personal pronoun use can tell us who the individual is focusing on, and how he or she construes themselves within the relationship. It seems like a small word, but it says a lot about the relationship during a trying time. We found that focus on the spouse, rather than on the patient, lent to better marital quality for both partners. It was an indicator for us that the couple thought of themselves as a team, or a unit—not exclusively focusing on the patient.”

It would seem that balance and teamwork are always important in a relationship – even if one partner may appear to need more on the surface.

Both spouses need love, support, and a sense of personal identity. Don’t discount a healthy partner in favor of focusing exclusively on a sick one. A balance of attention will truly benefit both in the end.

How to Embrace Hygge: The Danish Value of Coziness

Denmark is often cited as the world’s happiest nation – and one has to wonder why. Geographically, this country is prone to long, difficult winters. Their days include few hours of sunlight. It rains about half the time, but the Danish disposition remains a sunny one.

How do they do it?

Systematically, there are measures in place that increase their levels of joy and fulfillment. Denmark is known for having generous policies when it comes to health care, education, and maternity leave. Their high taxes are balanced by a high degree of social mobility and low income inequality. Few Danes live in poverty, and family is prioritized more significantly than in most western nations.

The greatest contributor to the Danish happiness index, however, might be their cultural value of hygge.

Hygge, pronounced “HUE-gah”, does not have a direct translation in English. It is a concept more complex than a single action or value, and yet very simple in its daily implementation. Hygge encompasses all things that feel cozy, comfortable, and restorative to the soul. It’s enjoying a mug of hot cocao by the fireplace under a warm blanket. It’s snuggling with your dog while you read a good book. It’s sharing a pot of macaroni and cheese with your young children.

Hygge is about slowing down, filling up, and immersing oneself in the simple warmth of everyday life.

“The secret to hygge lies in paying attention to the rhythm of our daily lives,” says Louisa Thomsen Brits, author of The Book of Hygge: The Danish Art of Living Well. Think of the stressful moments in your day. Do you dread your morning rush? Find a way to inject it with hygge. Make a habit of sitting down for breakfast as a family with a plate of pancakes. Fight the bitter cold by cocooning yourself in a super soft sweater. Take the edge out of your morning commute by listening to your favorite book on tape. Bring a mug of hot apple cider to a tedious meeting. Brighten a rainy day with some fun rain boots. Use simple joys to bring comfort and coziness into an otherwise unpleasant task. Soon you may even find yourself looking forward to these moments as restorative points in your day.

Hygge should not be a solo endeavor.

“Hygge is about connection,” explained Thomsen Brits. “It happens whenever we gather in a wholehearted, inclusive way.” After all, isn’t spending time with our loved ones truly the most effective way to warm and strengthen the soul? Snuggle up with your family and watch a movie. Cook spaghetti for your friends instead of going out. Turn off the TV and break out some soft blankets and sweet treats. Learn more about the people you love. Cherish your time with them in a conscious – but relaxed – way.

Whenever possible, turn these moments into rituals. Routines create a sense of comfort and stability in a world that often leaves us unbalanced. Spend Saturday mornings snuggling under the covers as a family, rather than rushing between errands and chores. Cook a favorite meal every Wednesday with a small group of friends. Embrace holiday traditions. Create a nightly routine that helps you to wind down after a long day – mine includes a warm bubble bath, a candle, and a soft robe. These small rituals aren’t only sensory luxuries. They force us to slow down and restore ourselves. They heal the mind, body, spirit, and even the soul.

Happiness consists more in small conveniences or pleasures that occur every day, than in great pieces of good fortune that happen but seldom,” explained Meik Wiking in The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living. What everyday moments can you improve – or create – by embracing this value? How can you use it to warm up your life?
