Straws Made Of Wild Grass Are Vietnam’s Newest Zero-Waste Option

While we all become aware of the severity and consequences of the plastic problem on our planet, more and more people are stopping to use plastic straws altogether.

To tackle the problem, many people have come up with new ways to use sustainable materials to make straws from. The latest example comes from a young Vietnamese man who created a straw made of wild grass, which has been making rounds all over the web.

Tran Minh Tien runs Ống Hút Cỏ, a Vietnamese company that manufactures two types of straws out of sedge grass, which grows along the Mekong Delta, according to The Epoch Times.

Posted by Ống hút cỏ on Wednesday, March 27, 2019

The sedge grass has a hollow stem, so it is naturally shaped like a straw, a VnExpress International video explained.

The Facebook video explains how the grass is turned into food-safe straws.

In order to create both dried and fresh straws, the grass is picked, washed, and chopped into straw-sized tubes. Later, the inside of the staws is cleaned by an iron rod, followed by another washing.

If the straws produced are to be sold fresh, a hundred of them are collected and then packed inside banana leaves.

According to Ống Hút Cỏ’s webpage, fresh straws last for around two weeks inside a fridge, and should best be kept in a ziplock bag. Should you want to extend the lifespan of these straws, the webpage suggests boiling them with some salt, drying, and then storing them in a cold dry place.

If the straws are to be purchased by someone dried, after the last washing, they should be left out in the sun for 2-3 days, and then baked in an oven. This dries them out and prolongs their lifespan for up to 6 months at room temperature. Currently, these straws are only being used in Vietnam, but their creator is experimenting with delivering them to other nations.

If you wish to watch Ống Hút Cỏ’s short documentary below, make sure to click the captions button to activate English subtitles.

Both types of straws are edible, compostable, chemical and preservative-free, as well as affordable.

According to Ống Hút C, chewing them after consuming food can even clean your teeth and gums. The fresh ones cost around 2.6 cents per straw, while the dried ones cost around 4.3 cents, as per VnExpress International.

Vietnamese company Zero Waste Saigon aims to raise awareness of the global plastic problem, and it also sells straws made from Mekong Delta’s wild grass.

Tran Minh Tien told Green Matters that their company’s straws come from a different manufacturer than Ống Hút Cỏ.

A recent trend in returning to natural materials for everyday use, including banana leaves for packaging and natural…

While the most eco-friendly option remains not using straws at all, many people prefer to use them. However, it is amazing that new plastic-free options are increasingly becoming available all over the world.

Deer Walks Into Store To Check Their Goods, Comes Back Later With Her Family

A small gift shop in Fort Collins, Colorado, received some rather unexpected, yet adorably sweet customers.

Lori Jones was going about her usual day at the shop, which is part of the Horsetooth Inn and RV Park when a female deer wandered in as if she was about to pick out some presents or her family.

“It was hilarious,” Lori told The Dodo. “She was looking at the sunglasses and the chips. I was laughing so hard.”

After having a look around, the deer was lured outside with something tasty by Lori. But evidently, that wasn’t enough.

“About 30 minutes later, here comes the deer again with her whole family.”

And the little ones patiently waited outside for their mom.

“They were just looking in the doorway like, ‘Can we come in too?’ I said, No! It was so funny.”

At one point, Lori was able to lure the curious family away from her shop but not before taking some wonderful photos with her phone.

And while many wildlife animals can be seen in the wondrous Rockies area, such as mountain lions, deer, bighorn sheep, raccoons, and more , this was an unusual and surprising encounter.

Conservation Officer Who Was Fired For Refusing To Kill Bear Cubs Wins Legal Battle Clearing His Name

A Canadian conservation officer who was released from his job for refusing to murder two baby bears has won a legal battle over his firing.

“I feel like the black clouds that have hung over my family for years are finally starting to part,” Bryce Casavant told The Guardian. “But the moment is bittersweet – my firing should have never happened in the first place.”

In 2015, Bryce, who previously served in Afghanistan in the Canadian military, was sent to work in Port Hardy, British Columbia, where he lived at a mobile home park. One day, he found a female black bear going through a freezer of meat and fish.

Under the province’s rules, Bryce shot the big bear dead, but he decided to spare the cubs.

“Instead of complying with the kill order, he took the cubs to a veterinarian who assessed them and transferred them to the North Island Recovery Centre,” the court documents read.

The babies were eventually released back into their natural habitat but because of refusal to comply with the policy, Bryce was fired from his job.

He then spent a number of years fighting his employer’s decision at various provincial courts, and this week, the court of British Columbia ruled in his favor.

“I kept fighting so that I could clear my name. I’ve long stood for public service, honour and integrity. It’s how I was raised and how I’ve raised my daughter,” Bryce said.

“I really feel that I was targeted.”

And while the final ruling does not reinstate him back to his position, Bryce said that the decision was a “vindication” of his pricey legal battle, in which he had to stand against two provincial governments and his own union.

Conservation officers have been aware of the growing tension between public safety and the management of “garbage bears.”

Earlier in 2020, however, First Nations community members in BC protested the scheduled killing of a bear that had been seen eating garbage.

They lobbied the conservation service and government to relocate the animal. It was then successfully moved to another location but was eventually shot and killed.

Last January, conservation group Pacific Wild, which works closely with Bryce, found that over 4500 bears had been killed by conservation officers in the province in the last 8 years.

“[British Columbia] isn’t a shooting gallery for government employees,” Bryce wrote in the report. “It’s unreasonable to believe that, including juvenile bear cubs, over 4,000 black bears were killed ‘as a last resort’.”

Grateful Pup Cannot Stop Cuddling The Woman Who Rescued Him

Just like people, pets have feelings too. Many people try to deny that fact, but it is true. Animals know what love is and they can feel when someone loves and cares for them. Hence, they love them back.

And this is exactly the case with a Pitbull named Russ, who got adopted from a shelter.

Kayla Filoon was a student at Temple University who was working part-time as a volunteer for a local animal shelter when she met Russ for the first time.

The poor baby was struggling with a number of health conditions.

He had kennel cough, an eye infection, irritated and itchy skin, and a bleeding tail on top of everything.

But despite his health issues Kayla wanted to care for Russ.

Furthermore, those were some of the reasons why she felt she just had to do something to help.

And THIS right here people is why you should adopt!!! My niece and her newly adopted ACCT Philly dog of less than 2…

Posted by Jamie Holt on Monday, February 6, 2017

She saw how afraid and quiet he was, and she came to the realization that he was destined to become family.

In the following week, Kayla visited the pup again and even took him along for a drive.

And ever since that day, they formed an indestructible bond. She rescued the sweet baby, and now he just can’t get enough cuddles from her.

Emperor Penguins in Antarctica Accidentally Take the Perfect Selfie

Have you ever opened your phone to find it set to the front camera while you wanted to do something completely different?

If the answer is yes you might be able to relate to these Emperor penguins, who mistakenly took a selfie while sniffing around the equipment of an explorer in Antarctica.

Auster Rookery, the location where the selfie was taken, is a colony of breeding penguins that is situated on sea ice surrounded by icebergs.

There are a number of such penguin colonies in Antarctica, some of which are home to as many as 20,000.

All in all, there were around 238,000 breeding couples of Emperor penguins on the continent in 2012, according to PEW.

Australian explorer Eddie Gault visited the place, in hopes of getting some good pictures of the penguins before dusk. While he was in the middle of setting up his filming gear and had his back turned to the camera when the two curious penguins made their way towards him. They then knocked over the camera but it landed lens up and kept on filming, as per NPR.

In the video that came out of this, one penguin’s body enters into the shot first, followed by the second one.

Both of them look right into the lens, probably wondering what they have just stumbled upon. And before he knew it, Eddie had a better photo than he could have hoped for, except he couldn’t take credit for it.

The fortunate explorer later said penguins are “naturally curious” and that that they “seize[d] the opportunity for a selfie.”

The video has since received thousands of likes and shares on social media, and people are just loving it.

The penguins that were the stars in this hilarious incident are part of a species The International Union for Conservation of Nature has marked as  “Near Threatened.”

And while this means that their numbers are mostly stable and they are not in danger of extinction unlike other penguin species, they are still under serious threat due to the warming of the continent.

Cat With Two-Tone Face Fathers Kittens in Each of his Colors

An exceptional cat named Narnia, whose head is half grey and half black, has recently become the father of two bundles of joy in each of his colors.

Prada is the one in black and Phoenix the one in grey.

Instagram/amazingnarnia

Narnia’s strange anomaly is exceptionally rare and is normally caused by a condition known as chimerism.

Instagram/amazingnarnia

Chimerism occurs when an organism, also known as a chimera, has more than one set of genes, which means it has a number of sets of DNA.

It is believed to be the result of the joining of embryos during the first developmental stages.

Instagram/amazingnarnia

Narnia’s owner, Stephanie Jiminez, who works as a professional cat breeder, decided to get him tested and the results showed something astonishing:

Narnia has just ONE set of genes, which means he is in fact not a chimera.

Instagram/amazingnarnia | The wonder parents

There could be a logical explanation for his condition, but all we know is that he is able to procreate and pass on his special genes.

Instagram/amazingnarnia

His wondrous blue eyes also make him one of a kind, as this trait usually tends to happen in white cats.

Both of Narnia’s babies have green eyes.

Instagram/amazingnarnia

“When Narnia was born, I was extremely surprised. I knew immediately that he was exceptional. Narnia was born with a double black and grey face, which is very rare – normally a cat cannot be black and grey,” Jiminez told Press Reader.

And this one sure is!

Instagram/amazingnarnia

Narnia still lives with Jiminez in the UK, while the two babies have moved in with their new families.

If this miracle cat keeps on breeding, it will be interesting to see how the next generations will turn out, and whether they will continue passing Narnia’s genes on.

Instagram/amazingnarnia

Narnia’s rare condition is truly a miracle, especially since both Phoenix and Prada possess each of his true colors.

Hopefully, we will find out what the future holds for these beauties, and we will make sure to let you know as soon as we do!

Dog Saves Baby Parrot And Becomes Her Guardian In Life

A loving dog named Hiro has proved just how kind and sweet he is after one day his eye caught something interesting at his family’s backyard in Puerto Rico.

And he immediately let his owner, Viviana Davila know.

“I noticed Hiro licking something on the grass. Hiro licked this thing and looked at me, and insisted again by licking it and looking at me,” Davila shared with The Dodo. “That gave me the signal that there was something going on and I approached Hiro.”

When she took a closer look, Davila realized her dog had found a baby bird in need of rescue.

“I instantly looked for a towel and picked her up,” she said. “She was very defenseless and helpless.”

Hiro is a savior. But this is not where he stopped.

A veterinarian told Davila that the bird was a baby Quaker parrot. She was paraplegic, probably due to her fall from the nest. That meant her chances for making it outside were next to none, and she most likely would have died if Hiro did not find her.

But the tiny bird showed great courage and strength. And that’s why Davila named her Hope.

“The vet told us that on similar cases he recommends clients to put them to sleep,” Davila said. “However, he was surprised to see how Hope was striving to live.”

Davila decided to make Hope a part of the family and provide her with a good life.

Following through what the vet told her, she has been feeding Hope regularly and doing all she can to make her feel cared for and comfortable.

“It has been a week and a half and she is doing far better,” she said. “Hiro has been part of that effort. Since day one he has not left her side.”

As the gentle bird has made herself comfortable in the care of her new family, she is getting stronger every day, and Hiro has done all he can to help her recover.

“Nothing matters anymore for him because he has a new purpose: taking care of Hope,” Davila said.

Today, anywhere Hope goes, Hiro follows.

An incredible friendship between dog and bird was born.

“Having Hope and taking care of her so far has been a really great experience,” Davila said. “She teaches us each day about perseverance, and Hiro about empathy and being a kind living creature and friend.”

Thanks to Hiro, Hope not only lives a safe and healthy life but also has a place to call home.

And hopefully their fairy-tale will go on for many years to come.

“We feel honored to have Hiro,” Davila said. “Although he has always been a really good boy, we are super proud of his development and feel happy to have embraced his honorable soul.”

Researchers: Cats murder everything, keep them inside!

A growing number of nature scientists are starting to see cats as the biggest killers on the planet, with thousands of species that become their victims.

The findings of an April 2020 research have naturalists urging cat owners to keep their pets indoors.

Scientists in Australia found that home cats are exterminating around 230 million birds, mammals, and reptiles each year.

In addition to killing native animals, cats were also hunting down around 150 million introduced animals, most of which are rodents.

“If we want native wildlife in our towns and cities – rather than introduced rodents and birds – then there are choices to be made,” Dr. Sarah Legge, head author of the paper published in the Wildlife Research paper said.

“All we need to do is keep pet cats contained.”

The experts gathered information from 66 studies of predation by domesticated cats around the world (including 24 Australian studies) in order to figure out the predation toll of pet cats in Australia, in addition to the predation pressure per unit area in residential areas.

Plus, they made a comparison of the estimates to those published for Australian feral cats.

According to the findings each feral cat kills about 576 native birds, reptiles, and mammals per year, while domesticated cats kill around 110 native animals each year – 40 reptiles, 38 birds, and 32 mammals.

The kill rate per capita of home cats is 25 percent that of ferals. All in all, this means domesticated cats were killing 82.9 million reptiles, 79.7 million birds, and 66.9 million native birds each year.

And while ferals are still a big threat to wildlife, according to Dr. Lehhe it is simpler for us to control the impacts of domesticated cats than ferals.

“Either keep them inside, or in secure pet runs outside,” she said.

A Cornell University study from 2015 found that cats kill an estimate of up to 4 billion birds and 22 billion small mammals countrywide.

Paul Anderson, president of the Cayuga Bird Club said:

“They have an instinct to kill things, even if they don’t plan on eating it. A cat can kill a half dozen animals a day, and their range is enormous,”

Senior scientific officer for companion animal at RSPCA Australia, Dr. Sarah Zito, added:

“Contrary to what some might believe, cats do not need to roam to be happy. Indoor cats can live longer lives, protected from all these dangers. And, if provided with everything they need, they can be just as happy at home.”

A grocery store in Canada has taken the idea of a rooftop garden a giant step further.

The 25,000 square foot rooftop garden of IGA Extra Famille Duchemin grocery store produces around 35 different types of crops, which they later sell in the very same store.

Ever since 2017, the Montreal-based market is growing its own produce, including kale, lettuce, carrots, green beans, eggplant, garlic, tomatoes, and spinach. Moreover, the rooftop garden also includes beehives for honey. As UpWorthy reveals, IGA’s co-owner, Richard Duchemin, claims their strategy is quite successful.

Curiously, the fascinating garden is even designed in the shape of the grocery store’s logo.

In an interview with the Montreal Gazette, Mr. Duchemin said that he hoped his store’s rooftop would serve as an example for other grocery stores to follow.

“Why don’t supermarkets plant vegetables on their roofs? Some restaurants have little boxes where they grow herbs. We pushed it further because we know we’re able to sell what we produce here.”

What’s more, IGA’s rooftop garden is environmentally maintained, implementing awesome eco-friendly solutions.

For instance, the irrigation water comes from the store’s dehumidification system—water which would have been discarded anyway. Besides, the lush outdoor space serves as a wonderful habitat for bees and birds.

This innovative gardening approach could definitely promote local produce. Duchemin shared with the media:

“People are very interested in buying local. There’s nothing more local than this.”

Not only planting more rooftop gardens will promote buying local, but it can also reduce the environmental and economic costs of transporting produce.

In a viral Instagram post by Good News Movement, IGA’s co-founder was quoted saying:

“Not only does a green roof help regulate the temperature of the building below it, saving energy, but it also feeds into consumer demand for food with a smaller carbon footprint.”

Just think about it! Wouldn’t it be amazing if your groceries were freshly picked the very same day you’re buying them?
